Newspaper: Trump Administration Prepared Internal Document to Dissolve UNRWA
Translation by SadaNews - The American newspaper Free Beacon revealed a document prepared by the Donald Trump administration that calls for working towards the dissolution of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
According to the American newspaper, as cited by the Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom and translated by SadaNews, the document was presented on July 29th to Congress by the U.S. State Department.
The document viewed UNRWA as a "corrupt and irreparable entity" and is currently seeking its complete dissolution.
The document noted that the United States has not funded UNRWA since January 2024 and is not engaging in any activities with it, limiting contact to the minimum necessary.
According to the American newspaper, this document came in the wake of discovering the involvement of at least 12 UNRWA employees in the attack on October 7th.
The Trump administration claims in its document that about 12% of all United Nations employees in Gaza are members of Hamas or other Palestinian factions.
A senior U.S. State Department official stated, "UNRWA has become a cover for Hamas's activities... the organization is corrupt to the core and has no future in Gaza."
The document alleged that "Hamas has looted UNRWA's humanitarian supplies and sold them on the black market. During the recent ceasefire negotiations, the movement demanded that the U.S. allow UNRWA to resume managing humanitarian aid networks in Gaza instead of the Gaza Relief Fund," considering this additional evidence that Hamas views UNRWA as a branch of its own, rather than a humanitarian agency operating neutrally, as stated in the newspaper.
The Trump administration maintained in the document that "UNRWA effectively acts as a civil arm of Hamas," and thus believes that "its complete dismantling is a necessary step to maintain stability and security in the region."
In February of this year, the Trump administration announced the severing of its relations with UNRWA, and in April of this year demanded the return of all funds donated by the United States for the agency's activities that have not yet been utilized, yet UNRWA has not returned them.
Last May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed all employees in his department, both domestically and abroad, to immediately cease all forms of cooperation with UNRWA officials at all levels.
