Portugal Plans to Recognize the State of Palestine in September
SadaNews - The office of Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced today, Thursday, that his government will consult with the president and parliament with the aim of recognizing the State of Palestine at the United Nations in September.
In a statement, he mentioned that Portugal is considering "recognizing the State of Palestine as part of a move that could take place during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next September."
Earlier on Thursday, German Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul stated that "the process of recognizing Palestine must start now."
He added that Israel is becoming increasingly diplomatically isolated due to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and amid some countries' push to recognize the State of Palestine.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also stated on Wednesday that his country intends to recognize a Palestinian state, clarifying that his goal is to maintain the prospects for a two-state solution.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced that the United Kingdom will recognize the State of Palestine in September unless Israel halts its war in the Gaza Strip.
France also announced last week that it would recognize a Palestinian state in September.
