Pressure in Britain to Recognize Palestine and European and International Condemnation of What is Happening in Gaza
SadaNews - A report published by Bloomberg indicated that several British government ministers are pressuring Prime Minister Keir Starmer to expedite the decision for official recognition of the Palestinian state.
According to the agency, British ministers expressed their dissatisfaction with Starmer's refusal to fulfill his promise to support the Palestinian state.
Health, Justice, and Culture ministers have called on Starmer and his Foreign Secretary to act quickly to recognize Palestine.
A French official, in a conversation with the Financial Times, expressed hope that other countries would follow in the footsteps of his country at the UN conference in September to recognize Palestine.
On Thursday, Starmer announced "emergency" talks between Paris, London, and Berlin, scheduled for Friday, to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip where "the suffering and famine... cannot be described or defended," as he stated.
Starmer urged Israel to allow immediate entry of aid into the Palestinian territory. He said in a statement conveyed by the French Press Agency: "I will have an emergency call tomorrow with partners from the European Triad (France, Germany, and the UK), during which we will discuss what we can urgently do to stop the killings and provide the food that people desperately need," adding that a future ceasefire in Gaza "will put us on the path to recognizing a Palestinian state."
Starmer affirmed that "statehood is an inalienable right of the Palestinian people," stating that a ceasefire "will put us on the path toward reaching a two-state solution that ensures peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis."
Meanwhile, Canada condemned today, Friday, the Israeli government's failure to prevent what Prime Minister Mark Carney described as a humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
Carney accused Israel of violating international law by preventing Canadian-funded aid from reaching civilians in the war-torn Palestinian territory.
Carney wrote on X, "Canada calls on all parties to negotiate an immediate ceasefire in good faith. We reiterate our calls to Hamas for the immediate release of all hostages and to the Israeli government to respect the territorial integrity of the West Bank and Gaza."
In a related context, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement today, Friday, that every possible effort must be made to protect the lives of innocents and to end the suffering and hunger of Gaza's residents, describing the situation as a "humanitarian disaster."
Albanese added in the statement, "The prevention of aid by Israel and the killing of civilians, including children, who are seeking water and food cannot be ignored or justified."
