
Brazil: We Will Join the Lawsuit for Genocide Against Israel
SadaNews - The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Brazil is finalizing its request to join the genocide lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel's practices in Gaza before the International Court of Justice.
In its statement, the Brazilian government accused Israel of violating international law "such as the forcible annexation of territories" and expressed its "deep indignation" regarding the violence inflicted on civilians.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva continuously and publicly criticizes Israel's practices in Gaza.
On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice over its involvement in "acts of genocide" against citizens in the Gaza Strip, thus violating the United Nations Convention of 1948 on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Since the issuance of the preliminary rulings, Palestine and several countries have applied to intervene in the case using a provision in the statute of the International Court of Justice that allows third parties to join the proceedings, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Chile, Spain, Mexico, and Turkey, while other countries have also announced their intention to join the proceedings.
