Israeli Opposition Leader: Targeting the Presidential Palace in Damascus is a "Reckless Act"
SadaNews - Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned today, Thursday, the targeting of the presidential palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus, yesterday, Wednesday, describing the act as a "reckless action."
Yair Lapid confirmed in an interview with a program broadcasted by Israeli Channel 2 that "Protecting the Druze in Syria is important, but without targeting the presidential palace in Damascus."
Lapid pointed out that targeting the presidential palace in Damascus "does not serve strategic goals."
He opposed the "overthrow of the regime" in Syria, emphasizing that Israel "needs stability in Syria."
The Israeli army announced yesterday, Wednesday, that it bombed the Syrian General Staff headquarters and targets around the presidential palace in Damascus.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the Israeli bombing that targeted government institutions and civilian facilities in Damascus and Sweida, holding Israel responsible for the escalation, and calling on the international community to act to stop its "repeated aggression."
For his part, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara stated that Israel seeks to turn Syria into a chaos arena, adding that he does not fear war.
In a televised address to the Syrian people in the backdrop of the violence witnessed in the Sweida Governorate in southern Syria over the past days, broadcast early Thursday morning, he said, "The Israeli entity that has always accustomed us to targeting our stability and creating discord among us since the fall of the defunct regime is now again trying to turn our pure land into an endless chaotic arena."
He considered that Israel aims to dismantle the unity of the Syrian people and weaken their capabilities to advance in the "process of reconstruction and rising."
Since last Sunday morning, the Sweida Governorate in southern Syria has witnessed violent clashes between the people of Sweida (from the Druze community) and Bedouin tribes, prompting the Syrian Ministry of Defense to send military reinforcements to the governorate to support the security barriers, which were attacked and to resolve the armed clashes in the governorate.
