Guterres Calls for an End to the War on Gaza and the Start of a Political Solution
SadaNews - Today, Monday, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza that paves the way for a political solution based on the UN Charter, international law, and the resolutions of UN bodies.
Guterres stated in press remarks at the headquarters of the international organization, "What we are witnessing in Gaza is a level of death and destruction unprecedented in recent times, and it undermines the most basic conditions of human dignity for the residents of Gaza," describing the situation in Gaza as "horrific."
He expressed hope that the parties could overcome the difficulties they face so that a ceasefire can be achieved, adding that "a ceasefire is not enough; it is essential that it lead to a solution."
He indicated that "this solution will only be possible if both Palestinians and Israelis can live in a state where they can exercise their rights."
Guterres explained that this is why a conference on the two-state solution is being held this month, noting that the existence of 5 million people in their own country and on their own land without any rights is in stark contradiction to the principles of humanity and international law.
