Occupation acknowledges its shortcomings in "Ofakim": Violent confrontations and hostage-taking during the Al-Qassam operation

SadaNews Translation - Israeli media published a military report on Monday morning revealing details of an operation carried out by a group of Al-Qassam Brigades within the "Ofakim" settlement on October 7, 2023, as part of the large-scale attack launched by the Palestinian resistance that day on multiple locations in the occupied territories.

According to the investigation led by Israeli Brigadier General "Simcha Orin", 15 Palestinian fighters stormed the settlement in the early hours of the morning aboard small trucks before launching an attack in the "Mishor HaGivon" neighborhood, resulting in casualties among Israelis, including police and military personnel, as well as the taking of hostages inside one of the houses.

According to the report as translated by SadaNews, there was intense fighting in multiple neighborhoods in the city, involving both civilians and Israeli security personnel, resulting in the deaths of several of them, and others were injured. There was also a hostage situation inside the home of an Israeli family, which lasted until the early hours of the following day, before the "Yamam" special unit stormed the house and announced the death of the four fighters inside, resolving the crisis.

The operation, described by Israelis as a "complex urban battle", also revealed Israeli security failures in protecting the settlement, according to the Israeli army's acknowledgment. However, the official narrative praised the actions of the police forces and the "Yamam" unit during the confrontations.

Among the results of the investigation, as reported by "Israel National News", the operation witnessed clashes in densely populated neighborhoods within the Ofakim settlement, making it difficult for the Israeli occupation to distinguish between Palestinian fighters and armed settlers. The Israeli report also revealed the weakness of the fortifications in the "Mishor HaGivon" neighborhood, which increased the vulnerability of its residents during the confrontations.
