Reports: Hamas demands the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners including 100 serving life sentences
Follow-up from SadaNews - Talks regarding the exchange deal between Israel and Hamas are ongoing, amid reports that the movement is demanding the release of about a thousand Palestinian prisoners from occupation jails, including 100 serving life sentences, in exchange for the release of 18 Israeli detainees, 10 of whom are alive.
According to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, the list includes names that Israel considers "heavy", which it previously refused to release in past deals.
The most prominent name at the top of the list is Marwan Barghouti, a leader in the Fatah movement, sentenced to five life sentences and an additional forty years for carrying out operations that resulted in the deaths of five Israelis.
Hamas is also demanding the release of Ahmad Sa'adat, the Secretary-General of the Popular Front, accused of orchestrating the assassination of Israeli minister Rehavam Ze'evi in 2001, and sentenced to thirty years in prison.
The list also includes Abdullah Barghouti, one of the leaders of Hamas's military wing in the West Bank, sentenced to 67 life sentences, the harshest prison sentence in Israel, after being accused of involvement in operations during the second intifada.
Additional names on the list are Hassan Salameh, sentenced to 46 life sentences, and Abbas Al-Sayed, accused of participating in the bombing of the "Park" hotel in 2002 which resulted in the deaths of 30 Israelis, as well as Ibrahim Hamad, a prominent Hamas leader in the West Bank previously, sentenced to dozens of life sentences.
Israeli estimates indicate that the deal represents a "rare opportunity" to return some detainees from Gaza and end the war, at a time when an Israeli delegation has traveled to Doha to pursue negotiations, following a new response received by Israel from Hamas.
- Details of the prisoner exchange according to the proposed deal: It is expected to involve the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners plus 100 prisoners serving life sentences - if it is achieved.
- Hamas is expected to demand the release of senior prisoners who may change the balance of power in the West Bank. Among the names: Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, Popular Front Secretary-General Ahmad Sa'adat, and Hamas leader Abdullah Barghouti.
This time, according to estimates, Hamas's demands will include names that Israel had previously rejected releasing. It is estimated in Israel that Hamas is setting a very high ceiling this time - not only in terms of numbers but also in terms of the identities of the prisoners.
Palestinian sources estimate that these demands aim not only to free the prisoners but also to change the balance of power in the Palestinian political arena - especially in the West Bank, where these figures enjoy considerable popularity.
