Damascus Plans to Build a New Airport with a Capacity of 30 Million Passengers

SadaNews Economy - The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority announced a plan to build a new airport in the capital Damascus, with a capacity of up to 30 million passengers annually, in a move that may represent a qualitative shift in the aviation infrastructure in Syria.

The head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, Omar Al-Husari, affirmed that the project also includes the investment in Mezzeh Military Airport and its conversion into a civilian airport, as part of a broader plan to rehabilitate and develop the aviation sector in Syria. He added that the five airports in the country need rehabilitation, describing them as "promising investment opportunities" for interested companies.

The plan also includes upgrading Damascus International Airport to raise its capacity to 5 million passengers per year, in addition to developing Aleppo International Airport to accommodate 2 million passengers annually, according to what Al-Husari announced.

Syrian-Saudi Investment Forum 2025

The statements of the head of the Civil Aviation Authority were made on the sidelines of the Syrian-Saudi Investment Forum 2025, which kicked off yesterday in Damascus, with wide participation from both sides. The forum witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Saudi "Mawared Holding" and the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, indicating Saudi Arabia's direct involvement in the projects to develop the Syrian aviation sector.

On Wednesday, the Syrian capital welcomed a Saudi delegation comprising more than 100 private sector companies and 20 government entities, according to a statement from the Saudi Ministry of Investment, which described the forum as "the inauguration of a new investment era between the kingdom and Syria."

Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih announced that the forum resulted in the signing of 47 investment agreements worth 24 billion riyals (6.4 billion dollars), indicating the interest of more than 500 Saudi companies in exploring investment opportunities within Syria.
