Qatar: We Support the Initiation of Negotiations Between America and Iran to Achieve Sustainable Solutions

SadaNews - The Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, affirmed his country's support for the start of negotiations between America and Iran to achieve sustainable solutions, following the postponement of the Iranian-American talks that were scheduled to begin today, Friday, in Switzerland.

During his meeting with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland, Al Thani stated that these negotiations would contribute to enhancing regional security and opening new horizons for cooperation, development, and prosperity, in a way that serves the common interests of the peoples of the region and the world.

The two sides also discussed during the meeting the cooperative relations between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen them, alongside discussing the latest regional developments, especially the diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.

Ceasefire

This came after it appeared that the memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the US to end the war in the Middle East, including Lebanon, was on the line, with the postponement of the talks that were scheduled between the two parties in Switzerland amid a surge in confrontations in Lebanon.

The Swiss government announced the indefinite postponement of the negotiations scheduled for Friday in Switzerland between Tehran and Washington, aimed at launching a 60-day process to resolve the core issue related to Tehran's nuclear program.

After US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Beizakian virtually signed the memorandum of understanding stipulating the cessation of war at all fronts, including Lebanon, it was planned to be officially signed on Friday in Switzerland, launching the negotiation phase, with the presence of Vance and the Iranian Shura Council President Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who each led their country's delegation in the only round of direct negotiations that took place in Islamabad in April.

However, Vance canceled his visit, as did Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, whose country played a crucial role in reaching the agreement through its mediation efforts.

For its part, Tehran clarified that these negotiations were linked to the commencement of implementing specific conditions and provisions in the memorandum of understanding signed between the American and Iranian presidents on Wednesday night.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei stated on Friday that the talks regarding the final agreement depend on the commencement and continuation of implementing specific provisions in the memorandum of understanding with America.

He also added that "the memorandum of understanding was signed electronically and officially, which made the scheduled meeting in Switzerland today not urgent at this time."
