Switzerland: Cancellation of Talks Scheduled Today Between America and Iran
SadaNews - The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced in a statement the cancellation of talks that were set to take place today, Friday, between the United States and Iran at the mountain resort of Bürgenstock in the country.
The statement came after a White House spokesperson indicated a few hours earlier that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance had canceled a trip planned to meet Iranian negotiators in Switzerland today to start discussions on implementing the agreement between Tehran and Washington to end their conflict.
This postponement has cast ambiguity on when the negotiation period between Washington and Tehran, which is supposed to last for 60 days and is extendable, will actually begin, as stipulated in the memorandum of understanding.
It has also raised many doubts and speculations regarding the likelihood of the two sides reaching a final agreement, especially since some issues may pose significant obstacles, notably the Lebanon file. Israel has continued its airstrikes on southern Lebanon despite the U.S.-Iran agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed yesterday that the military would not withdraw from what he termed the safe zone in Lebanon, which extends about 10 kilometers south of the Litani River.
Additionally, the issue of funds and the "Investment Fund" has been a topic of debate between the U.S. and Iranian sides in recent hours. Furthermore, the "management" of the Strait of Hormuz after the 60 days could become one of the explosive issues.
