Political Anger Erupts in Washington Over Agreement with Iran
SadaNews - The U.S. capital, Washington, is experiencing a political upheaval following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between President Donald Trump's administration and Iran. The agreement, which came as a surprise, sparked a storm of criticism in the halls of Congress, with lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties expressing their rejection of what they termed a "serious retreat" in U.S. foreign policy.
Opposition politicians considered this step to be a "historical sin" that could weaken the strategic position of the United States in the Middle East and open the door for unacceptable concessions to Iran. In contrast, supporters of the agreement believe it could open a new window for dialogue and ease regional tensions, although this opinion remains a minority in the current political landscape.
According to the American Axios website, President Trump has faced increasing criticism from both Democrats and hardline Republicans since details of the memorandum leaked. Nevertheless, Senator Lindsey Graham expressed his support for the agreement following a lengthy call with White House advisor Yitkov, reflecting a division within the Republican Party itself.
The site also noted that Iran requested to delay the publication of the document until it was officially signed, which caused some discontent within the White House, where some officials regarded this delay as weakening the administration’s image in front of the public.
On another note, Axios mentioned that media outlets supportive of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - most of which have been staunchly supportive of U.S. President Donald Trump since the beginning of his second term - began launching public attacks against Trump and his team after the electronic signing of the memorandum of understanding with Iran.
The site pointed out that a host on channel 14, close to Netanyahu, insulted U.S. Vice President JD Vance with vulgar names and accused Trump’s envoys, Steve Yitkov and Jared Kushner, of "anti-Semitism," claiming they had "sold Israel" for personal financial gains.
