Trump Announces Signing of Memorandum of Understanding with Iran (Video)

SadaNews - U.S. President Donald Trump announced in the early hours of Thursday morning the signing of a version of the memorandum of understanding with Iran.

Axios reported that the United States and Iran electronically signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to end the war.

The site quoted senior U.S. officials as saying that the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran came into effect after being signed remotely.

The site noted that President Trump personally signed a version of the agreement during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles, and a picture of the signed agreement was sent to the Iranians and intermediaries.

An American official confirmed that President Trump and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian were the ones who signed the memorandum of understanding.

The Associated Press reported that U.S. officials said on Wednesday that the draft agreement includes a new standard represented by a "minimum" reduction level for mixing Iran's highly enriched uranium, and also includes provisions to ensure the "territorial safety" of Lebanon following recent Israeli attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanese territory.

In return, the United States will move to suspend some of the wide-ranging sanctions imposed on Iran without lifting them, once the agreement is signed.

Officials stated that the U.S. draft of the agreement also includes allowing transit through the Strait of Hormuz without any fees for only 60 days and does not prevent the imposition of fees in the future.

An Iranian official media reported in the early hours of Thursday morning that the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baqai, said that the leaders of the United States and Iran have officially signed the memorandum of understanding between their two countries.

Baqai mentioned, as reported by Reuters, that "negotiating teams are still scheduled to attend Geneva."

He added, "Negotiations will immediately commence regarding the implementation mechanism of the memorandum of understanding."

He continued by saying, "Oil sanctions imposed on Iran must be lifted, and it should be able to start selling its oil starting today for 60 days."

He stressed that "the other party should not increase its military presence in the region or impose new sanctions during the sixty days."

Regarding the nuclear file, the spokesperson said: "Iranian nuclear materials will not be sent outside the country, and the current option is to dilute enriched uranium."

Regarding its frozen funds, the spokesperson said the U.S. is "committed to removing all obstacles preventing Tehran from accessing its frozen funds."
