Trump: I asked Netanyahu to be more cautious in Lebanon.... We handed Israel the memorandum of understanding
SadaNews - On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Iran with the resumption of military operations if it does not adhere to its commitments, two days before the anticipated signing of an agreement the two countries reached to end the war; he also stated that he wants Israel to "exercise good judgment and be capable of defending itself," noting that Washington has sent it the memorandum of understanding, and that Tehran can possess ballistic missiles.
Trump mentioned that he has a disagreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Israel's approach to Lebanon, stressing that he has asked him to adopt a more cautious approach in the attacks conducted by the Israeli army.
He added in remarks made on the sidelines of the G7 leaders' summit that Netanyahu is "a great person but he sometimes gets overly enthusiastic," pointing out that their relationship is good and there is a "strong partnership" between the United States and Israel.
Trump noted that he told Netanyahu: "You need to be kinder to Lebanon, and it’s not necessary to demolish an entire building every time a Hezbollah member arrives in the area."
In reference to the nature of the relationship between Washington and Tel Aviv, Trump said that the U.S. and Israel have a strong partnership, but he added that Israel is the "smaller party in this partnership, and we are the ones who determine the direction."
Earlier, Trump said, "No, it is not final. It is a memorandum of understanding," referring to the agreement expected to be signed with Iran in Switzerland on Friday.
The U.S. president added on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that "If I don’t like it, we will go back to shooting at them."
He continued, "If they (the Iranians) don’t behave, we will go back to dropping bombs on their heads (...) because they have misbehaved for 47 years," referring to the Islamic Republic that was established following the victory of the Islamic revolution and the overthrow of the U.S.- and West-aligned monarchy in 1979.
During his meeting with el-Sisi, Trump stated that what has been reached is "not a final agreement" but a memorandum of understanding paving the way for a broader agreement, adding that the Straits of Hormuz have partially opened and will be fully reopened in the next two days, noting that the results of the agreement appeared quickly in the markets with indicators rising and oil and fuel prices dropping immediately after its announcement.
Trump also denied the validity of reports about a $300 billion fund as part of the agreement with Iran, asserting that the U.S. is not investing in it and that the memorandum does not stipulate Washington paying any money to Tehran, but he indicated that his country cannot prevent any other party from investing there.
Trump emphasized that the sanctions imposed on Iran were effective, warning that if "the Iranians don’t behave," the U.S. will go back to "dropping bombs on their heads," as he put it. He also accused the Iranians of "deceiving" former President Barack Obama and obtaining billions of dollars.
Trump and Modi Meeting
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons and that the Straits of Hormuz will be opened immediately.
Trump pointed out that "Tehran has exploited the world for 47 years," asserting that his current deal represents a "crucial wall" preventing it from acquiring nuclear weapons, ultimately leading to a completely nuclear-free Iranian state.
The U.S. president added that the deal with Iran will happen because it wants to return to normal life, noting that a memorandum of understanding has been signed preventing Tehran from possessing nuclear weapons, expressing his belief that it will turn into a contract.
Trump warned that if Iran does not complete or implement the memorandum of understanding, the U.S. will return to square one again and resume bombing.
On the economic and military side, Trump announced a huge increase in stock market indicators thanks to the settlement with Iran, alongside a sharp decline in oil prices.
He mentioned that U.S. forces went into Iran and defeated it militarily in the first week, adding at the same time that he "wants Israel to have good judgment and to be able to protect itself."
In a separate political course mentioned during the statements, President Trump indicated that he is currently considering imposing new economic sanctions on Russia.
The U.S.-Israeli war against Iran began on February 28, with the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior officials in airstrikes.
Negotiations for a final agreement between the U.S. and Iran to end the war are scheduled to begin on Friday, immediately after the signing of the agreement in Switzerland, with a deadline of 60 days to discuss its details.
