Senate Thwarts Ninth Attempt to Curb Trump's War Powers
SadaNews - The U.S. Senate, by a single vote, thwarted the latest attempt led by Democrats to restrict President Donald Trump's war powers, which would lead to halting military operations against Iran.
The Senate rejected the ninth effort initiated by Democrats regarding this issue by a vote of 48 to 47, since Israel and the United States launched their airstrikes on Iran at the end of February.
The council's vote came after a framework agreement announced by the White House and Tehran this week to resume a ceasefire and conduct talks to end the conflict.
Members from both parties expressed skepticism about this agreement and voiced their frustration with the White House’s refusal to share its details. Senate and House members are awaiting an official briefing from the U.S. administration, but no date has been set before the official signing ceremony of the agreement in Switzerland next Friday.
Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock from Georgia, who presented the resolution, said in a speech before the vote: "Join me in putting an end to this president’s unlawful warlike tendencies," considering that "it is always the right time to do what is right."
The council's vote was largely partisan, as only 4 Republicans voted with most Democrats in favor of the resolution, while Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania voted against it alongside most Republicans.
While Republicans hold a slim majority in both the Senate and the House, the House recently backed a resolution aimed at ending the war with Iran.
