Gasoline gallon at 30,000 pounds.. Fuel crisis strangles the Sudanese capital

SadaNews - The Sudanese capital, Khartoum, along with its three cities, Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum North, as well as several states, has faced a fuel crisis that has persisted over the past weeks, affecting transportation, economic activities, and the daily lives of citizens.

During the peak of the crisis, the black market has notably thrived, with the price of a gasoline gallon ranging between 27,000 and 30,000 Sudanese pounds (approximately 11 to 12 dollars).

Mohamed Ali, a car owner, told Al Jazeera that the fuel crisis is linked to several factors, including the decline in the value of the local currency and disruptions in fuel supplies, which reflect on the prices of goods and services and the overall lives of citizens.

For his part, Mukhtar Mohammedin, a public transport bus owner, told Al Jazeera that he has to stop working for a full day after two days of operation in order to secure fuel.

He pointed out that bus drivers spend long hours waiting in line at fuel stations, which directly affects their daily income and ability to continue working.

Additional burdens

For his part, Bashir Al-Khair, a bus owner, told Al Jazeera that the rising cost of living and repeated increases in the prices of goods and services, along with the disruption of fuel supplies, have imposed additional burdens on workers in the transport sector.

He added that the effects of the war have impacted various sectors, pointing out that vehicle owners face increasing difficulties in continuing their work regularly.

Conversely, Faiz Farouk, a gas station owner, assured Al Jazeera that the crisis is moving towards gradual relief, explaining that the disruption in supplies during the past period caused a shortage in available quantities and congestion of vehicles in front of the stations.

He added that the improvement in fuel flow in recent days has contributed to alleviating the severity of the crisis, with expectations of gradually stabilizing conditions in the upcoming period.
