Rubio Accompanies Trump to Beijing with a Chinese Name
SadaNews: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be in Beijing today, Wednesday, alongside President Donald Trump, despite being subjected to sanctions from China, which has included changing the way his name is written as part of its new approach towards him.
As a senator, Rubio has fiercely defended human rights in China, which has retaliated by imposing sanctions on him twice, a tactic often employed by the United States against its adversaries.
China stated yesterday, Tuesday, that it would not prevent Rubio, who is 54 years old and visiting China for the first time, from boarding the presidential plane with Trump, the first U.S. president to visit Beijing in nearly a decade.
Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Bingyu said, "The sanctions target Mr. Rubio's statements and actions when he was a member of the U.S. Senate regarding China."
It appears that China has found a diplomatic solution after Trump appointed Rubio as Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.
Just before taking office in January 2025, the Chinese government and state media began translating the first part of his surname with a different Chinese character.
Two diplomats indicated their belief that this change was a way for China to avoid enforcing its sanctions, thus preventing Rubio from entering its territory using the old spelling of his name.
A State Department official confirmed that Rubio was traveling with Trump.
Rubio, an American of Cuban descent who is staunchly opposed to communism, was a prominent author of legislation enacted by Congress that imposed sweeping sanctions on China over "the Uighur minority and repression in Hong Kong," allegations that Beijing has denied.
