Pakistan Continues to Pursue an Agreement Between Washington and Tehran.. the Latter Conditions Lifting the Siege
SadaNews - After U.S. President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire with Iran, Islamabad has intensified its efforts to finalize a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran.
In this context, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif received the Iranian ambassador Reza Amiri to discuss the negotiation path following the extension of the ceasefire which was supposed to end today.
Al-Arabiya channel reported that communication is ongoing between the Pakistani army commander and Iranian leaders, and that work is still underway on the terms of the potential agreement between the United States and Iran.
It added that Iran has informed Pakistan of its rejection of the continued naval blockade and demanded its lifting as a condition for resuming negotiations.
It also clarified that Iran has communicated to Pakistan its refusal to continue the naval blockade, conditionally requiring its lifting to resume negotiations.
Furthermore, it stated that Pakistan is still waiting for Iran's position on the negotiations, warning it of the impending deadline for negotiations.
Iranian television mentioned that Tehran may not comply with the ceasefire and will act according to its interests, according to a source in the Iranian government.
On another note, Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeed Irvani stated that Tehran would be ready to participate in the next round of negotiations with the United States in Islamabad as soon as the blockade on Iranian ports is lifted, indicating that Tehran considers this blockade a violation of the ceasefire.
President Donald Trump had approved a Pakistani request to extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely to allow more peace talks; however, it was unclear, as of Wednesday, whether Israel, a U.S. ally in the conflict that erupted two months ago, would agree to this.
Trump added in a statement on social media that the United States has agreed to the request of Pakistani mediators "to stop our attack on Iran until its leaders and representatives can reach a unified proposal and conclude the discussions, one way or another".
