Jordan announces interruption of natural gas supply from Mediterranean fields
SadaNews - The Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, stated today, Sunday, that the recent events occurring in the region have led to an interruption in the supply of natural gas to Jordan, which is sourced from the Mediterranean fields used for electricity generation.
The Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported that Al-Kharabsheh said, in a press statement, that the approved emergency plan has been activated, transitioning to various energy alternatives, including natural gas via floating vessels, diesel, or heavy fuel oil.
The minister clarified that the switch from natural gas to diesel costs the National Electric Power Company approximately 1.8 million Jordanian dinars daily.
He confirmed that Jordan has sufficient strategic reserves and that there are no issues from a technical standpoint regarding the supply process.
In a related context, the Israeli Ministry of Energy announced the cessation of gas exports to Egypt following the military exchanges with Iran on Saturday.
For its part, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed that it has implemented a series of proactive measures in recent times to secure energy supplies for the local market from natural gas and petroleum products. This is part of integrated efforts within the Cabinet in coordination with the relevant ministries and state institutions, ensuring the fulfillment of needs and enhancing readiness to deal with any developments, especially in light of the rapidly evolving geopolitical and regional developments, given that energy security represents one of the core pillars of national security.
The ministry stated that it is closely monitoring the current developments resulting from recent military strikes and the implications thereof, as well as the cessation of gas supplies from the Eastern Mediterranean through the lines. The ministry reassured citizens of the existence of diversity in gas supply sources and ready alternative capabilities.
