Axios: 6 Reasons Why a Clash Between the United States and Iran is Imminent
SadaNews: Axios's American website listed the reasons leading to a potential war between Iran and the United States as President Donald Trump seeks to secure a nuclear deal with Iran since his return to the White House.
Here are 6 reasons making the option of war between the United States and Iran plausible:
1- The Nuclear Dispute
The United States and Iran are engaged in sporadic talks regarding a nuclear deal, with Washington insisting on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Since his return to the White House at the beginning of last year, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to reach a new nuclear deal with Tehran and has sometimes hinted at his intention to change the regime in Iran. Axios believes that any new American military operation could go beyond nuclear objectives.
2- The Killing of Protesters
Trump was on the verge of launching a military strike against Iran in early January of last year following the deaths of thousands of protesters demanding a change of regime due to deteriorating economic conditions.
According to Axios and other American media outlets, Trump backed down from military action because his country did not have enough military capabilities to launch an attack on Iran and manage its regional ramifications, unlike the situation in June of last year when he supported the war waged by Israel against Iran.
However, the United States has currently bolstered its military capabilities in the region in parallel with the resumption of nuclear talks with Iran.
3- Aircraft Carriers
In tandem with his repeated threats to the Iranian regime, President Trump ordered the deployment of two aircraft carriers to the region, which created immense global expectations that he would strike Iran if a swift agreement was not reached between the two sides.
Axios states that the United States typically does not move two aircraft carriers and hundreds of warplanes to specific locations unless it has the intention to use them.
4- Israeli Pressure
Regionally, Israel is preparing for war and is calling for a comprehensive military operation transcending the limited strikes Trump considered in January of last year.
Officials from America and Israel are anticipating a broader joint military campaign than the one that took place in June of last year.
The website pointed out that the Israeli government is preparing for war within days, aiming to target the overthrow of the Iranian regime, in addition to destroying its nuclear and missile programs.
5- Oil Prices
Axios believes that the current oil market may present a strategic opportunity for Trump to strike Iran, as the markets are experiencing a surplus in supplies, prices are relatively low, demand growth is modest, and Iran's capabilities through proxies are weak.
In this context, rising prices in the event of war would be limited if oil supplies are not affected or even if the disruption is confined to Iranian exports alone.
This possibility is reinforced by the fact that Iran has not implemented its threats to close the Strait of Hormuz since the 1980s, which is a crucial transit point in global oil trade.
6- Iran's Internal Situation
Domestically, President Trump tends to believe that the time is right for military action due to the "weakness of the Iranian regime" following massive protests and the impact of the Israeli-American war in June of last year.
Israeli and American officials do not rule out that Iran will respond to any military attack, but they believe that such a response would be limited under the current circumstances after Israel targeted Tehran's allies in the region over the past two years.
Axios concluded that the current situation makes this impending war vital for the Iranian regime, increasing the potential for escalation.
