Two Dead and 8 Seriously Injured in Shooting at American University

SadaNews - The mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, announced the death of two people and the serious injury of 8 others in a shooting incident at Brown University.

Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that the shooter has not been apprehended yet, announcing a curfew in the area surrounding Brown University.

For its part, the FBI director stated: "Our personnel are deployed at the shooting scene at Brown University, and we will provide whatever is necessary."

Providence police had previously announced several injuries from the shooting around Brown University, confirming that investigations are still ongoing.

Other American media outlets reported that up to 20 people were injured.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said, "What happened is unbelievable," adding that his office is in contact with the White House.

President Donald Trump stated, "I have been briefed on the situation at Brown University, and it is a terrible situation; the victims' injuries are very severe."

The police urged students and residents in the area to shelter in place or stay away from the area until further instructions are given.

The university administration also requested that students continue to shelter in place with doors locked, indicating that no suspects have been apprehended yet.

Law enforcement described the suspect as a man dressed entirely in black.

Authorities reported that the last sighting of the gunman was as he was leaving the building, noting that no weapon has been found.

Brown University is considered one of the elite universities among the eight prestigious American universities known for their high academic standards, with approximately 11,000 students enrolled.

The shooting occurred in the Barus and Holley building, which houses the engineering and physics departments on campus, where several exams were scheduled to take place.

This shooting is the latest in a long series of attacks on schools in the United States, where attempts to restrict gun ownership have failed.
