Yedioth Ahronoth: Israel Seeks a Paper Allowing Freedom of Action in Gaza Similar to Lebanon
Translation SadaNews - The website of Yedioth Ahronoth reported this Thursday evening that Israel is working to obtain a side understanding letter with the United States regarding the security situation in the Gaza Strip.
The website clarified, as SadaNews translated, that this letter will be attached to the text of the UN Security Council resolution regarding the future of the Gaza Strip, which is expected to include disarmament of the region and the mandate for an international stability force to enter.
Through this letter, Israel aims to ensure freedom of action in the Gaza Strip, which will be granted to Israel under the formula of the proposed resolution in the Security Council.
A similar mechanism was used concerning the ceasefire framework in Lebanon, which provided, in addition to the agreement between countries and mediators, an American side letter addressing Israel's freedom to act against Hezbollah and its threats.
The website noted that this time the mechanism is different after the internationalization of the conflict and the issuance of a joint resolution with Arab countries in the United Nations.
The site stated: It is unclear whether the Americans will agree to present a side letter related to the resolution they are drafting themselves.
It pointed out that the Israeli objective of the American side letter is to establish the limits of Israeli freedom of action concerning the international stability force that the UN resolution will define, as well as to cement the American guarantee regarding what will happen if this force fails to disarm Hamas.
According to the anticipated draft resolution expected to reach the Security Council in the coming days, the mandate of the international stability force, which will consist of troops from several Arab countries, is likely to include Indonesia, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan, alongside Palestinian forces. The mandate will also include, according to the draft, disarming Palestinian organizations.
