Expelled from Congress... Trump Reduces Sentence of Convicted Former Republican Congressman for Corruption
SadaNews - President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has commuted the sentence of former Republican Congressman George Santos, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for financial crimes, declaring that he will release him, according to "Agence France-Presse."
In a post on his social media platform "Truth Social" on Friday, the American president wrote: "George has been in solitary confinement for long periods (...) and has suffered very terrible treatment."
He added: "At least Santos had the courage, persuasion, and intelligence to always vote for Republicans. Therefore, I just signed a decision to commute the sentence and release George Santos from prison immediately."
The 37-year-old former congressman was accused of illegally using the identities and financial information of donors to his campaign to steal funds, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced last April. The sentence began to be served in July.
The "New York Times" also revealed a series of lies in his biography and campaign messages shortly after he was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 as a representative for New York.
Later, a report from the House Ethics Committee accused him of "seriously maligning the institution" by diverting donor funds and using them for luxury purchases, in casinos, for cosmetic treatments, and for online payments.
In December 2023, Republican and Democratic lawmakers voted to expel him from the House of Representatives.
