Jordan to Supply Internet Capacities to Syria Within Weeks

Sada News - Syria announced an agreement to supply internet capacities from Jordan within weeks, coinciding with the completion of the 'Silk Link' project, aimed at improving internet speed in the country, according to a post by Syrian Communications Minister Abdul Salam Haykal on the 'X' platform today.

This step follows Haykal's visit to Amman and his meeting with Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Sami Samirate, amid Syria's efforts to establish itself as a regional and international hub for internet connectivity.

The 'Silk Link' project, announced by the Syrian Ministry of Communications last May, includes activating regional connection points with neighboring countries Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, in addition to providing a new land route connecting Europe to Asia.

Improvement of Internet Speeds in Syria

The Syrian minister stated that internet capacities will begin to be supplied within weeks after repairing the fiber optic cable from 'Nassib/Jaber' to Damascus, expecting that internet speed will significantly improve after the agreement is activated.

Syria, in cooperation with global companies, aims to develop fiber optic infrastructure and build a regional internet center, with a total speed of up to 100 terabits/second, according to a previous statement from the ministry.

Haykal added: 'Infrastructure projects take time, but work is underway at full speed.'

The 'Silk Link' extends over an estimated distance of 4500 kilometers of fiber optics, including complete connectivity between the main cities of Damascus and Aleppo, with switching centers in Palmyra and in the southern and eastern regions, in addition to a landing point for submarine cables in Tartus.
