A New Study Reveals an Unexpected Benefit of Cranberry Juice
SadaNews - Cranberry juice may be more than just a refreshing drink; a recent study suggests it could help reduce stress levels and improve short-term memory in young adults. Although the researchers did not find a direct impact on mood improvement or anxiety reduction, the results open the door to a deeper understanding of the role of polyphenol-rich foods in supporting brain health.
Cranberries are among the richest sources of a specific type of these compounds known as proanthocyanidins, which prompted a team of researchers at King's College London to question: Can a daily cup of cranberry juice improve mood or memory?
The results of the study, known as CRANMOOD, were published in the journal Clinical Nutrition and reported by Eating Well.
How was the study conducted?
The researchers employed a scientific design considered one of the most rigorous: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, where neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was consuming the real juice and who was receiving the placebo until the study was completed.
The study involved 72 final-year university students, aged between 20 and 26 years.
Participants were asked to drink 236 milliliters of cranberry juice daily or a similarly colored and flavored placebo drink, but without the polyphenol compounds, for 12 weeks.
The cranberry juice provided daily:
-442 milligrams of polyphenols
-303 milligrams of proanthocyanidins
The researchers measured a wide range of indicators, including:
-Overall mood
-Stress
-Anxiety
-Depression
-Cognitive performance and memory
-Cortisol stress hormone levels in saliva
-Metabolites of polyphenols in blood and urine
What did the results show?
Regarding mental health, the researchers found no clear differences between the two groups; levels of:
-Mood
-Stress
-Anxiety
-Depression
did not differ whether among those consuming cranberry juice or the placebo.
However, the biological results appeared more intriguing.
After 12 weeks, participants who consumed cranberry juice showed:
-A significant decrease in cortisol levels associated with stress.
-An improvement in short-term memory.
-An improvement in short-term verbal memory.
Blood and urine analyses revealed elevated levels of some polyphenol metabolites, including hippuric acid, which correlated with reduced cortisol levels.
The researchers believe these results indicate that the body absorbed the polyphenol compounds and benefited from them, but the study does not conclusively prove that these compounds are the direct cause of the improvement.
What are the limitations of the study?
The researchers pointed to several limitations that warrant caution when interpreting the results, most notably:
-All participants were already healthy, and their stress, anxiety, and depression levels were low, limiting the chances of observing a significant improvement.
-The sample was predominantly female and included students of Asian descent, which may limit the generalizability of the results to all demographics.
-Improvements in memory and cortisol were part of secondary analyses, meaning some results could be due to statistical coincidence.
-The study lasted only 12 weeks, which is a relatively short period.
-Consuming one drink daily does not reflect the impact of a complete and balanced diet.
The researchers also clarified that the study was funded without any conditions by the Cranberry Institute, emphasizing that the funding body did not interfere in the study's design, analysis of results, or interpretation.
What do these results mean in daily life?
The researchers believe the results warrant cautious optimism.
The participants typically consumed amounts of polyphenols that were about 50 percent below the average intake in the United Kingdom, indicating they could benefit more from adding a rich source of these compounds.
However, the main message remains clear:
Instead of relying on one type of juice or fruit, it is preferable to follow a diverse diet rich in plant-based foods, such as:
-Various types of berries
-Vegetables
-Whole grains
-Nuts
-Tea
Cranberry juice can be part of this system, but it is not a magic cure on its own.
In summary of the study
This study indicates that drinking a daily cup of cranberry juice for 12 weeks did not directly improve mood or reduce anxiety and depression in university students, but it was associated with lower levels of the stress hormone and improvements in some aspects of short-term memory.
The researchers view the results as promising, yet preliminary, and requiring larger studies involving a more diverse population before reaching firm health recommendations.
For now, adhering to a diet rich in plant-based foods remains the most reliable choice for supporting body and brain health, and cranberry juice may be a beneficial addition for those who enjoy it as part of a balanced diet.
