Gold Falls Ahead of Ambiguous Decision on U.S. Interest Rates
SadaNews - Gold prices declined ahead of a much-anticipated decision regarding U.S. interest rates later this week, which may spark widespread controversy, while a temporary calm in Middle Eastern tensions has alleviated inflationary concerns.
The precious metal dropped by as much as 0.8% to around $4,040 per ounce, erasing modest gains from the previous session.
Traders are now preparing for a potentially controversial decision regarding interest rates from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, as policymakers are divided between the milder-than-expected inflation reading for June and the recent rise in oil prices accompanying renewed fighting between the U.S. and Iran.
Interest rate swaps indicate a roughly 40% likelihood of a 25 basis point hike on Wednesday, which is an unusually high level of uncertainty just ahead of the Federal Reserve's decision, according to recent years' standards.
"Citadel Securities" stated that it expects a rate hike this week, a move it says will enhance the credibility of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh in the battle against inflation.
Christopher Wong, a strategist at "Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp", remarked: "Even if the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates unchanged, a hawkish message or a clear sign that further tightening is still under consideration may support real yields and the U.S. dollar, temporarily limiting gold's recovery."
Gold has fallen by nearly a quarter since the war began five months ago, fueled by rising energy prices and inflationary pressures. However, the metal has remained near the key support level of $4,000 per ounce since late June, supported by a wave of buying when prices dip. Gold-backed exchange-traded funds have increased their holdings for five consecutive days, marking the longest winning streak since May.
Ceasefire Supports Gold Amid Anticipation of Interest Rate Decision
Recent developments in the Middle East have provided further support. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the U.S. and Iran have returned to talks to end the five-month-long war, after both sides halted strikes in recent days. The U.S. president remarked that there is a "very good chance that something will happen" regarding an agreement, adding that a return to fighting is likely if negotiations fail.
However, expectations of rising interest rates keep gold under pressure, according to analysts at "Zhishui Investment Management", based in Shenzhen. They wrote in a note: "The recent upward price movements lack momentum and show some hesitation."
Spot gold fell by 0.7% to $4,047.22 per ounce at 10:25 AM in Singapore. Silver dropped by 1.7% to $57.39 per ounce. Both platinum and palladium traded lower, while the Bloomberg Spot Dollar Index, which measures the U.S. currency, edged slightly higher.
