Rome Prepares for New Israeli-Lebanese Talks Under American Sponsorship

SadaNews - The Italian capital, Rome, is set to host a new round of talks between Israel and Lebanon next week, under the auspices of the United States, as part of efforts to stabilize calm along the southern border and advance the implementation of security understandings that followed the ceasefire between the two sides.

According to a U.S. State Department official, whose remarks were reported by the Israeli N12 network and journalist Barak Ravid, the meetings will take place between August 4 and 6, focusing on the possibility of expanding the Israeli army's redeployment in southern Lebanon, as well as discussing disputes related to the land borders between the two countries.

The U.S. official stated that there is a "significant momentum" in the Israeli-Lebanese track following the launch of the first "experimental zone" in southern Lebanon, as well as following the meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and U.S. President Donald Trump last week.

He added that the technical groups meeting in Rome will work to push for the full implementation of the U.S.-sponsored framework agreement, noting that the agenda includes expanding the experience of the experimental zones, addressing all outstanding border issues, and working towards reaching a comprehensive peace and security agreement between the two sides.

The U.S. official clarified that the first experimental zone currently being implemented in southern Lebanon represents an opportunity for practical progress on the ground by strengthening the authority of the Lebanese state through the verifiable disarmament of armed organizations, alongside building the necessary trust to transition to new stages.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the current experiment will allow for the development of mechanisms to implement these zones, paving the way for their gradual expansion to other areas in southern Lebanon.

The U.S. official did not specify the areas that might be included in the expansion, nor did he receive an official comment from either the Lebanese or Israeli governments regarding the details of the upcoming meetings.

This round comes at a time when several contentious points remain along the land border between Lebanon and Israel, including disputed areas that have remained unresolved for years. Lebanon demands Israel's withdrawal from the sites it still occupies within its territory, while Israel asserts that any further steps will be linked to security arrangements on the Lebanese side.

The meetings are also expected to discuss mechanisms for expanding the redeployment of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, in line with the security understandings reached in recent months under American sponsorship.

The United States has been leading intensive communications between the two sides for months, aimed at preventing a resurgence of military confrontations and transforming the ceasefire into more stable security arrangements.

The U.S. official affirmed that the trilateral framework agreement represents the "only pathway" to achieving lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon, adding that the U.S. administration views the full implementation of this framework as a mutual interest for both parties, and that the Trump administration is committed to continue its support.

It remains unclear what the chances of success are for the talks in reaching final understandings on the proposed files; however, the U.S. official indicated that the upcoming round aims to achieve practical progress on technical and security issues, paving the way for broader steps if the positive atmosphere between the two sides persists.
