Nitric oxide plays an important role in relaxing blood vessels and improving circulation, which can positively affect heart health and blood pressure.

Studies link watermelon to improved vascular function.

In a small study involving 17 participants, those who consumed 500 milliliters of watermelon juice daily for two weeks showed significant improvement in vascular dilation and some indicators of microvascular function, especially after a rise in blood sugar levels.

Other research has supported these findings, with a scientific review of 17 clinical trials finding that regular long-term consumption of watermelon contributed to improvements in arterial stiffness indicators.

This is important because arterial stiffness is associated with high blood pressure and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and heart attacks.

Despite the encouraging results, Katz warns against overestimating the benefits of watermelon.

She said: "The scientific evidence is still limited, and some studies have not found clear benefits of watermelon on vascular health."

She added: "Watermelon can be considered a heart-healthy food, but it is not a magical cure for hypertension or heart diseases."
