Amid Negotiations, US Military Announces Downing of Iranian Drones Targeting Ships in Hormuz

SadaNews - The US military announced late Friday to Saturday that US forces "shot down" Iranian drones that were targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) noted on X that "Iran launched one-way attack drones in an attempt to strike commercial vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz," indicating that the strait "remains open to navigation."

US President Donald Trump had warned Iran on Friday against launching more drones at ships attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite some contradictory messages between Washington and Tehran on Friday, it seems that the negotiation track between the two sides is approaching its most sensitive stage, with increasing discussions about nearly complete understandings signaling the imminent end of the war.

In this context, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the final agreed text for a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, affirming that his country is closely working with both sides to finalize the next steps.

Although this development strengthens indications of progress in the negotiation process, the positions of Washington and Tehran still reflect a clear divergence regarding the details of the agreement.

While President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric in response to leaks about the features of the agreement, stating that "the leaked terms have no relation to what has been agreed upon in writing," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi heralded that reaching a memorandum of understanding with Washington "is closer than ever."

Araghchi indicated that ending the blockade, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, are part of the temporary agreement that Israel opposes.
