Newsweek: 3 Indicators of an Imminent War Between the United States and Venezuela
SadaNews - Newsweek magazine stated that the deployment of warships by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration off the coast of Venezuela, along with increased political and economic pressure on President Nicolas Maduro's government, are indicators of an impending military confrontation between the United States and Venezuela.
The magazine noted that these actions fall within a broader trend of reasserting U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere, with Washington reaffirming its commitment to reviving and applying the Monroe Doctrine, which regards the region as a traditional sphere of American influence.
The magazine outlined three indicators suggesting that war could erupt between the United States and Venezuela at any moment. The first indicator is the U.S. transition from imposing sanctions to seizing Venezuelan oil tankers, which has provoked sharp tension in the shipping sector and has been described by Nicolas Maduro as acts of international piracy.
The second indicator is that Washington has intensified its military operations in the Caribbean under the pretext of combating drug trafficking, resulting in dozens of casualties and raising human rights concerns. The U.S. administration maintains that it is targeting a regime accused by officials of flooding the United States with drugs, as reported by the magazine.
Simultaneously, there has been a noticeable increase in the movement of U.S. aircraft and naval deployments near Venezuela, according to the magazine. This includes advanced fighter jets, strategic bombers, and aircraft carriers, as well as drills simulating strikes on targets within Venezuelan territory, representing one of the largest military presences in the region in years.
Observers believe this mobilization reflects Washington's diminishing patience with Maduro and its nearing of more drastic options. Michael Foreman, chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote in an analysis last week, "The President's tolerance for Maduro appears to be increasingly waning."
Conversely, the Venezuelan leadership has emphasized its readiness to defend the country's sovereignty and resources, announcing the reinforcement of military ranks, which seems to be the third indicator of an impending war, according to the magazine.
Venezuela has confirmed that the real aim of U.S. actions is to overthrow the government and seize control of Venezuelan oil, amidst a backdrop of threats and military and political escalation, raising fears that the crisis could spiral into an open confrontation with wide-ranging implications for the security and stability of Latin America.
