Germany Allocates One Billion Euros to Support Global Efforts in Combating AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria
SadaNews - Germany has announced the allocation of one billion euros over the next three years to support global efforts in combating AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
German Development Minister Reem Al-Ably Radovan confirmed this financial commitment in favor of the Global Fund for the period from 2026 to 2028. The politician, affiliated with the Social Democratic Party, made this statement during the opening of the Global Health Summit in Berlin, saying: "With this step, we send an important message that Germany will continue its commitment to protecting people around the world from diseases."
Al-Ably Radovan explained that achieving this funding came despite painful budget cuts and significant austerity pressures within the ministry, emphasizing that combating major infectious diseases is not only a humanitarian duty but also a rational necessity because pathogens do not recognize borders. She added that every euro invested in the fund is beneficial as it strengthens health systems in partner countries and makes the world more resilient, stating: "With this, we will save millions of lives."
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, established in 2002, is the largest multilateral health funding entity for poor countries, relying on contributions from governments, charitable foundations, and private donors.
The German Development Ministry stated that the new funding round aims to save the lives of more than 23 million more people. The German pledge also includes 100 million euros in the form of debt swaps.
The Global Health Summit, which is a specialized international conference, was opened in the German capital Berlin yesterday, Sunday.
However, the announcement by the German government was met with praise from American billionaire Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, whose foundation works to reduce global disparities. Gates told the German newspaper "Tagesspiegel" that Germany's commitment will "crucially contribute to saving millions of lives and putting the world back on a path to progress."
Bono, co-founder of the relief organization "ONE" and lead singer of the rock band "U2," also praised Minister Al-Ably Radovan for "showing real leadership strength" and thanked German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his "strong support."
