The Arab League condemns the opening of a "Somaliland" embassy in occupied Jerusalem
SadaNews - The Secretary-General of the Arab League condemned today, Tuesday, the opening of what is known as the "Somaliland" embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem, in a clear violation of the existing international consensus regarding the legal status of the city and undermining international efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy decisions and the two-state solution principle.
The Arab League emphasized in a statement issued by the "Palestine and the Occupied Arab Territories Sector" that this rejected step, in form and substance, represents one of the manifestations of entrenching illegal occupation, and a continuation of the occupying power's approach in implementing more procedures and measures that would alter the legal, historical, and demographic status of the holy city, isolating it from its Palestinian surroundings and undermining the Palestinian existence and sovereignty within it.
It affirmed that these procedures are considered void and invalid and entail no legal effects under international law and the relevant United Nations resolutions.
The Secretary-General also affirmed that East Jerusalem is an integral part of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, reiterating its steadfast position and support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their right to establish their independent sovereign state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and the relevant United Nations resolutions.
It reiterated its complete solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia, and its unwavering support for its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to assume its legal and political responsibilities, and to take the necessary positions and actions to preserve the legal and historical status of the city of Jerusalem, and to prevent any attempts aimed at imposing a new reality on the ground or legitimizing Israeli occupation and its illegal practices in the occupied Palestinian territories.
