Saudi Arabia Confirms the Need to Strengthen the Role of the United Nations in Supporting the Palestinian Cause

SadaNews - Saudi Arabia, on behalf of the Arab group, delivered an intervention during the hearing session for the candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, María Fernanda Espinosa, affirming the support of Arab countries for the efforts of the United Nations and enhancing its role in addressing international challenges, achieving peace, security, and sustainable development.

The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the United Nations, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, explained that the Arab group looks forward to constructive cooperation with the next Secretary-General, which would contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of the international organization and reinforcing its principles and objectives, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency, "SPA", today, Tuesday.

The intervention included several questions related to ensuring respect for international law, enhancing the role of the United Nations in supporting the Palestinian cause and implementing relevant international resolutions, in addition to supporting the work of UN bodies, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, "UNRWA".

The intervention also addressed the financial challenges facing the United Nations, the importance of supporting developing countries, and accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, along with reforming the Security Council and the UN initiative "UN80", which enhances the organization's efficiency and capacity to perform its core missions.

It is noteworthy that the UN initiative "UN80" is a reform and restructuring project launched by the organization's Secretary-General, António Guterres, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the organization.
