Study: Sugars Lead to Hair Loss
SadaNews - The issue of hair loss remains a dilemma for many, especially among the youth, amid ongoing research exploring solutions.
A recent study published in the journal Nutrition and Health revealed the relationship between the consumption of sugary beverages and hair loss.
It clarified that the natural rate of hair loss is between 50 and 100 hairs per day, which is a normal result of the hair life cycle on the head.
The factors that can cause hair loss to exceed this range and become abnormal are numerous, some linked to genetics, stress, and hormones.
A recent study showed that sugary drinks, including soda, promote hair loss. This study was published on August 21 of this month and analyzed 17 scientific publications, surveying over 61,000 participants.
- The effect of sugary beverages:
The study indicated that excessive consumption of sugary beverages and foods raises insulin levels and increases inflammation in the body. This can lead to hormonal imbalances that weaken hair follicles and increase their rate of shedding. It also hinders the absorption of essential nutrients needed for hair growth, such as proteins and iron.
The list of foods that cause hair vitality loss and delay its growth when consumed excessively is long, with the most notable ones being:
· Salt:
The harms of salt are comparable to those of sugar regarding hair. Although salt is rich in sodium, which is beneficial for the body, excessive intake leads to a slowdown in blood circulation, delaying nutrient delivery to the hair, contributing to weak growth and loss.
· Fried foods:
This type of food negatively affects the scalp as it is rich in hydrogenated oils and trans fats, which may increase sebum secretion in the scalp. This can cause blockages in hair follicles. This issue also applies to fast foods, which are high in salt and fats, as they elevate the levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a primary cause of baldness, and increase male hormone levels, intensifying the likelihood of significant hair loss.
· Raw eggs:
Cooked eggs are considered beneficial for hair as they are rich in vitamins that promote hair growth. They contain proteins that contribute to keratin formation. However, consuming raw eggs can lead to biotin deficiency, which is critical for keratin production, the essential component of hair. Raw eggs also contain a type of protein that prevents biotin absorption in the intestines, causing hair loss.
· Caffeinated sodas:
These beverages contribute to hair weakness as they contain large amounts of sugar and caffeine, which may lead to imbalances in blood sugar levels and increase inflammation. Their high caffeine content also weakens some essential nutrients for hair growth, including calcium and iron.
· Certain types of fish:
Fish are a rich source of proteins and omega-3 acids; however, some types contain high levels of mercury, which may delay hair growth. Notable fish with high mercury concentrations include tuna and mackerel, so it is advised not to consume them excessively. Fish with low mercury levels such as sardines, salmon, and cod are recommended as part of a balanced diet.
· Refined foods:
These foods turn into sugar when digested in the stomach. They cause an increase in insulin levels and disrupt hormonal balance, negatively affecting hair growth. Notable examples include refined grains, white flour, white bread, white pasta, pastries, and cakes made from white flour.
Previous warnings
Many studies have warned that the normal rate of hair loss is between 50 and 100 hairs daily. However, when shedding exceeds this limit, it may result from multiple causes ranging from genetic, environmental, hormonal, and even dietary factors.
It highlighted that diet plays a crucial role in hair health, as certain dietary habits may accelerate hair loss or even cause it.
