The European Troika Signals Sanctions to Bring Tehran Back to Negotiations

SadaNews - The Financial Times reported on Tuesday that France, Germany, and the UK have informed the United Nations of their readiness to reimpose sanctions on Iran if Tehran does not return to negotiations with the international community regarding its nuclear program.

The report added, citing a letter seen by the newspaper, that the foreign ministers of the so-called "European Troika" wrote to the United Nations on Tuesday to indicate the possibility of "reimposing sanctions" unless Iran takes action.

The ministers said in the letter, "We have made it clear that if Iran is not willing to reach a diplomatic solution by the end of August 2025, or if it does not seize the opportunity for an extension, then the three European countries are prepared to activate the sanctions reimposition mechanism."

This warning from the "European Troika" comes after talks with Iran in Istanbul last month, which was the first direct meeting since the Israeli and American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

The Financial Times revealed late last month that the Europeans are willing to grant Iran a "limited extension" of the deadline before activating the "snapback mechanism," provided that Tehran accepts specific conditions related to uranium enrichment and transparency of nuclear facilities.

In this context, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharib Abadi stated that his country has clarified its "principled" positions, noting that consultations with the Europeans continue, without offering any tangible concessions.

While the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, called on Iran for "full transparency," he expressed optimism about the return of international inspectors to Iranian nuclear sites later this year, emphasizing the "necessity of restoring normal relations with Iran" in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
