Egypt Achieves Historic Victory Over New Zealand in World Cup, Approaching Round of 32

SadaNews - The Egyptian national football team achieved its first victory in its World Cup history, defeating New Zealand 3-1, in the second round of Group 7 in the 2026 World Cup hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

In its previous three World Cup participations in Italy 1934, Italy 1990, and Russia 2018, along with the first match in the current edition, the "Pharaohs" played eight matches, resulting in three draws and five losses. However, they kicked off their winning journey by beating New Zealand in Vancouver in the early hours of this Monday.

The New Zealand team took the lead in the 15th minute through Finn Surman, but Mustafa Zico equalized in the 58th minute. Mohamed Salah then scored Egypt's lead in the 67th minute, and substitute Mahmoud Hassan "Trezeguet" secured the final goal in the 82nd minute.

This victory raised the Egyptian team's tally to four points, putting them at the top of the group, benefiting from Belgium's goalless draw with Iran on Sunday evening.

Mohamed Salah became the all-time top scorer for the Egyptian national team in the World Cup after raising his tally to three goals, breaking his tie with Abdelrahman Fawzy, who scored two goals for Egypt in their first World Cup participation in 1934.

Hossam Hassan became the first coach to lead the Egyptian national team to a World Cup victory, adding this achievement to his historical record as the first coach to lead Egypt as both a player and a coach in the World Cup.

The Egyptian team will conclude its group stage matches against Iran on June 27 of this month.
