Report: Inspection of Iranian Nuclear Sites is an American Goal in Switzerland

SadaNews - The United States seeks to take an early step to build trust with Iran during the first round of talks hosted by Switzerland, by obtaining Iranian approval allowing United Nations inspectors to visit nuclear sites that were targeted by American and Israeli airstrikes during the recent war.

Axios reported from two regional sources familiar with the matter that Washington aims for the first round of negotiations to conclude with an official Iranian invitation for inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to visit those sites, a step that could serve as a practical indicator of Tehran's commitment to the new negotiating path.

The report indicated that the last similar visit by IAEA inspectors to these sites took place before the war in June 2025.

Coinciding with the launch of the talks, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance arrived in Switzerland to participate in the first round of negotiations, while the Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, also arrived.

According to Axios, the U.S. administration has shown a willingness to take parallel steps to support the negotiating process, including allowing Iran to access part of its frozen funds abroad.

The report clarified that the current round represents the first direct negotiations between the two sides since the Islamabad summit, aiming to establish a practical framework for a 60-day negotiation process to address outstanding issues, primarily Iran's nuclear program and implementation mechanisms for the agreed understandings.

Qatar and Pakistan are also participating in mediation efforts, alongside the presence of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, while technical meetings between experts are expected to continue after the conclusion of the high-level political round.
