Yemen Calls on the Security Council to Include Aidros al-Zubaidi on the Sanctions List
SadaNews - The Yemeni government demanded yesterday, Tuesday, that the United Nations Security Council include the head of the dissolved Southern Transitional Council, Aidros al-Zubaidi, who is accused of "high treason," on the international sanctions list.
The government named Aidros specifically among a list that included a group of individuals and entities involved in "destructive activities or obstructing political life," and called for their inclusion in international sanctions.
Yemen's Ambassador to the United Nations, Abdullah al-Saadi, stated during a briefing he gave to the Security Council that "the government has adhered throughout the past phase to the highest levels of restraint and has granted opportunity after opportunity to address internal challenges through dialogue, to close the chapter of the past, and to focus on the battle to restore state institutions."
However, he added that "some leaders and forces chose to continue undermining state institutions, seeking to obstruct the implementation of national and international commitments, hindering government work, and supporting armed groups that threaten public peace and harm the transition process and the noble efforts supported by this Council to achieve a comprehensive settlement in the country."
Call to Update Yemen's Sanctions List
In this context, according to al-Saadi, "state institutions, in accordance with the constitution and law, have taken a series of actions against several individuals involved in acts of rebellion, corruption, and serious violations of human rights, led by Aidros al-Zubaidi, who is accused of high treason."
Al-Saadi called on the Security Council to "fulfill its responsibility to update the sanctions list whenever the facts require, including all individuals and entities proven to be involved in destructive activities or obstructing the political process, or seeking to impose unilateral measures by force."
The sanctions list for Yemen was established by the Security Council pursuant to Resolution 2140 of 2014, and includes measures targeting individuals and entities that threaten peace, security, and stability in Yemen or obstruct the political process. Among these measures are asset freezes and travel bans, and later a targeted arms embargo was added, with the list currently comprising 10 individuals and one entity, according to UN data.
