"Google" Says Android is No Longer Just an Operating System
SadaNews - During the "The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026" event, "Google" attempted to present a new vision for the Android platform, asserting that Android is no longer just an operating system, but has become what the company describes as a smart system capable of understanding and executing user intentions.
However, despite the grand ambition behind this statement, many believe that it remains closer to a marketing rephrase than a radical transformation in the nature of the system.
"Google" Bets on Gemini at the Heart of Android
During the event, "Google" relied on deeper integration of Gemini's capabilities within the system to prove its new idea, according to a report published by "phonearena" and reviewed by "Al-Arabiya Business".
The new features include Gemini's ability to perform multi-step tasks across applications, summarize screen content, fill forms using user data and context, and even create custom Widgets through simple text commands.
The company also unveiled features like "Magic Cue," which extracts instant information from emails or calendars, in addition to "Rambler," which can transform disorganized voice notes into organized written messages.
Why is "Google" Using This Discourse Now?
The move comes at a time when tech companies are racing to redefine their relationship with artificial intelligence.
"Apple" continues to promote the Apple Intelligence platform, while "Samsung" is vigorously pushing to integrate Galaxy AI into the One UI interface.
In contrast, "Google" is trying to convey the message that artificial intelligence is not merely an additional feature within Android but has become an essential part of the platform's identity itself.
But Android is Still an Operating System
Despite this discourse, Android 17 remains practically a traditional operating system by all measures.
It still manages applications, notifications, storage, permissions, and the internal hardware of devices, in addition to providing familiar system features such as Material 3 Expressive design, App Bubbles, the new screen recorder, and the separation between the notification panel and quick settings.
The real difference lies in Gemini being closer to the heart of the system compared to previous versions, making it capable of understanding screen content and executing interconnected tasks after obtaining user permissions.
Real Success Depends on Execution
The biggest challenge for "Google" does not relate to marketing slogans, but to its ability to deliver these features in a practical and stable way.
The experience of Apple Intelligence seems to be a clear example of this, as "Apple" faced criticism due to the delay of some features and their incomplete maturity despite the grand promises upon their announcement.
In contrast, "Google" has a relative advantage thanks to the strength of the Gemini model compared to some competitors, but the success of the experience will ultimately depend on the reliability of daily performance of the new smart features.
Android is Changing... But Its Name Has Yet to Change
In the end, it appears that Android is indeed entering a new phase where artificial intelligence becomes an essential part of the user experience; however, this does not necessarily mean that the system has stopped being an operating system.
The current reality indicates that Android 17 is still the familiar Android, but with a deeper and more integrated presence of Gemini's capabilities within various parts of the system.
