China urges Pakistan to intensify mediation efforts between Iran and the US
SadaNews - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Pakistan to "intensify" its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States and to assist in addressing the issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Chinese news agency "Xinhua".
Wang Yi made a phone call on Tuesday to his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, as reported by Xinhua on Wednesday morning.
US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in China, Iran's main strategic and economic partner, on Wednesday evening.
Xinhua added that Wang Yi "called on Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts and contribute to properly addressing the issues related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz".
Wang Yi stated according to the agency, "China will continue to support Pakistan's mediation efforts and will make its own contributions in this regard".
For its part, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry stated in a statement, "Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining a permanent ceasefire and ensuring the continuity of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz".
The diplomatic process mediated by Pakistan to resolve the crisis has reached an impasse. On Tuesday, the Iranian government rejected the idea of amending its proposals, which Trump said were "completely unacceptable".
