Despite Inflation and Tension, Europeans' Desire to Travel Reaches Its Highest Levels
SadaNews - The travel desires of Europeans for the spring and summer seasons of 2026 have reached their highest levels since 2020, signaling the ongoing recovery of the European tourism sector despite the tension and economic pressures that shadow travelers' decisions.
A recent report from the European Travel Commission revealed that 82% of Europeans plan to travel between April and September 2026, an increase of 10% compared to last year, which is the highest recorded level in the past six years.
The report indicated that young Europeans are the main drivers of this growth, with the age group between 18 and 24 years showing the largest increase in travel planning at 21% compared to last year, followed by the 25 to 34 age group with an increase of 16%.
Despite the increased demand for travel, the data showed that tourism behavior has become more cautious and selective, with a clear trend towards reducing the duration of trips and lowering the budgets allocated for them.
Trips lasting between 4 to 6 nights have become the most common choice among European travelers, while the percentage of those planning longer stays ranging from a week to 12 days has declined.
The report also revealed a growing tendency towards moderate spending, as the percentage of travelers who allocate up to 1,000 euros (about 1,080 dollars) for a single trip has increased, while the percentage of those planning to spend 1,500 euros (about 1,620 dollars) or more has decreased, reflecting a clear increase in sensitivity to travel costs and a search for greater value for spending.
At the same time, Europeans are tending to reduce the number of trips, with 39% planning to take only one trip in the next six months, an increase of 7% compared to last year, while the percentage of those intending to travel twice or more has decreased.
Safety First
According to the report, safety has become the most important factor in choosing tourist destinations, followed by stable weather conditions and suitable cost offers, while concerns related to rising prices remain one of the most influential factors in travel decisions, alongside increasing anxiety related to tensions in the Middle East.
Despite these challenges, Europeans continue to prefer traveling within the continent, with a growing tendency towards cross-border trips within Europe, as well as a greater interest in exploring more than one city within the same country rather than moving between several countries, reflecting a desire for deeper and more diverse experiences within a single destination.
The findings of the report reflect a European tourism scene that combines the ongoing strong desire to travel with increasing caution in spending and planning, amidst a more complex economic and political environment than in previous years.
