SadaNews - The ‘Meta’ platforms intend to track how their employees work, including keyboard strokes and mouse clicks, in a step aimed at training their artificial intelligence models, amid growing concerns within the company about the implications of this policy on the work environment and the future of jobs, according to the BBC.

The company, which owns the ‘Instagram’ and ‘Facebook’ platforms, informed its employees on Tuesday that a new tool will operate on the company's devices and internal applications, where it will record user activity and use it as training data for artificial intelligence technologies.

A spokesperson for the company told the BBC that developing smart systems capable of helping users accomplish their daily tasks requires "real-world examples of how people actually use computers," stressing that the data "will not be used for any other purpose," with "safeguards in place to ensure the security of sensitive content."

However, these reassurances did not dispel concerns among some employees. One employee, who requested anonymity, expressed worry that the most minute details of his daily work could become training material for artificial intelligence, at a time when expectations of a new wave of layoffs are on the rise, describing the situation as "bleak and close to a dystopian world." He added, "This company has become obsessed with artificial intelligence."

A former employee also viewed the tool as merely a "new means of imposing artificial intelligence on everyone," reflecting the widening gap between management ambitions and employee anxieties.

This step comes amidst broader changes within the company, which has already laid off about 2,000 employees this year through limited rounds of layoffs, while reports indicate the possibility of broader cuts in the coming months. Last month, ‘Meta’ imposed a partial hiring freeze that seemed to be heading towards further inclusiveness; the number of job postings has decreased from around 800 in March to just seven currently, without official comment on these developments.

The new tracking tool is known as the "Model Capabilities Initiative" (MCI), according to Reuters, which first broke the story. While employee activity on the company’s devices was previously available to management, its specification and recording for the purpose of training artificial intelligence systems represents a notable shift in the company’s approach.

This comes alongside trends announced by the company’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who pledged to significantly increase spending on artificial intelligence projects in an effort to place ‘Meta’ at the forefront of this global race. The company plans to spend about $140 billion on this sector in 2026, nearly double its investments a year ago.

As part of its expansion, the company acquired about half of ‘Scale AI’ in 2025 with an investment of $14 billion and attracted several of its senior executives to support the development of more advanced models. The first major launch after restructuring the ‘Meta Superintelligence Labs’ was the ‘Muse Spark’ model, in a step that reflects the accelerating pace of innovation within the company.

‘Meta’ relies on the data it will collect from its employees to develop more advanced artificial intelligence models, as questions grow about the boundaries between technological innovation and human privacy in the work environment.

Zuckerberg stated in January that 2026 will be "the year when artificial intelligence will fundamentally change the way we work," adding that projects that previously required full teams can now be executed by "one exceptionally talented individual" - a phrase that perhaps encapsulates the profound transformation that looms ahead... carrying vast opportunities, just as it stirs legitimate human concern.
