Destruction and Damage to 62,000 Homes Due to Israeli Attacks on Lebanon

SadaNews - The National Center for Scientific Research in Lebanon has reported the damage and destruction of more than 62,000 housing units as a result of Israeli operations during six weeks of war with "Hezbollah," according to a responsible source on Wednesday, as reported by "AFP."

During a press conference that included the release of a report on the "Environmental Impact of the Israeli Aggression" on Lebanon, Dr. Shadi Abdullah, Secretary-General of the National Council for Scientific Research, stated: "In about 45 days (of the war), we had 21,700 housing units destroyed and 40,500 housing units damaged."

Despite a ceasefire between "Hezbollah" and Israel that has been in effect since midnight Thursday to Friday for ten days, Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon continue to carry out demolition and bombing operations, as reported by Lebanese authorities and eyewitnesses, while preventing residents of dozens of border villages from returning to them. Photos taken by an AFP photographer from the Israeli side of the border in mid-month showed widespread destruction in two Lebanese border villages, while bulldozers and other construction vehicles were demolishing buildings in one of these villages.

The war that began on March 2 has resulted in the death of more than 2,400 people and the displacement of more than one million people from their homes.

The National Council for Scientific Research estimates, according to Abdullah, that "428 housing units were destroyed and 50 housing units were damaged during three days of the ceasefire," which Lebanon will request to extend for a month.

Washington is hosting a meeting on Thursday between the ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel, following their first meeting last week in decades, which was followed by the announcement from President Donald Trump of a ceasefire.

A Lebanese official source told AFP on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity, that "Lebanon will request the extension of the truce for a month and the cessation of Israeli bombing and destruction operations in the areas they are present."

Previously, "Hezbollah" and Israel fought a devastating war that lasted more than a year, which ended in November 2024 with a ceasefire, during which time the Israeli state continued to carry out airstrikes, especially in the south, where it maintained its forces in five strategic heights.

During the press conference, Environment Minister Tamara Al-Zein stated: "The aggression extending between 2023 and 2025, which is actually aggression that has not stopped, has caused enormous destruction on various levels," indicating "the damage and destruction of more than 220,000 housing units."

Israeli strikes did not spare residential neighborhoods, civilian infrastructure, or places of worship, and resulted in damage to vast agricultural and forested areas.
