Prisoners' Authority: Continuous Punishments and Harassment in 'Gilad' Camp at Ofer
SadaNews - The Prisoners and Released Prisoners Affairs Authority revealed the suffering of prisoners in "Gilad" camp inside Ofer prison, which worsens day by day amid the ongoing daily incursions and the tightening of conditions on prisoners in every detail of their lives.
The Authority's lawyer explained in a statement issued today, Sunday, that the camp houses about 100 to 120 prisoners distributed among 12 rooms, with approximately 16 prisoners in each room. The prisoners suffer from a severe lack of clothing and cleanliness, as shirts and underwear are changed only once a week, while pants are only replaced if torn, forcing many of them to wear the same pair for months.
The report indicated that the prisoners shower daily with cold water outside the rooms, using dish soap instead of shampoo, during the morning and evening "break" periods that do not exceed twenty minutes.
Regarding food, the prisoners stated that meals often consist only of bread and yogurt, with tuna or sausages provided only once a week.
The lawyer added that sleeping conditions are harsh, as metal beds (mattresses) are covered with very thin cushions, which drives some prisoners to sleep on the floor due to the limited space inside the rooms. Each prisoner receives only one blanket and a towel that is not replaced for weeks and is often not clean.
The prisoners pointed out that the camp's weather is very cold due to the open iron windows that allow air and rain to enter, while incursions and daily punishments occur for trivial or no reasons at all, such as standing near the window or praying in congregation.
The report explained that the prison administration punishes prisoners with isolation, beating, and electric shocks, as happened to the prisoners Muhammad Al-Qadi from Jalazone camp and Ali Abu Atiyeh from Beitunia. Moreover, prisoner Sheikh Jamal Al-Tawil was sprayed with gas for refusing to address one of the officers with the word "Toda" - thank you in Hebrew.
In addition to the aforementioned, prisoners are forced to kneel during the counting periods which take place four times a day, and are prohibited from sleeping after six in the morning or staying awake at night. Additionally, prisoners are shackled by their hands and feet and blindfolded during visits, forcing them to walk with their heads bowed towards the ground.
