The Knesset Approves in Preliminary Discussion the Law to Impose Israeli Sovereignty over the West Bank
SadaNews - Israeli Channel 12 reported that the Knesset approved today, Wednesday, in a preliminary discussion, the law to impose Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank.
The channel clarified that the proposed law received the support of 25 votes against 24 opposing votes.
In his first comment on the decision, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir stated, "The time to impose sovereignty over the West Bank has come now."
Many members of the Israeli government are pushing for the imposition of sovereignty over the West Bank, which will ultimately prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Earlier, Israeli radio reported that the occupying government fears that passing the law to enhance the occupation of the West Bank will ignite a crisis with U.S. President Donald Trump.
On July 23, the Knesset supported a proposal to annex the West Bank, with a majority of 71 deputies out of a total of 120.
This step was condemned by the Palestinian presidency, while Hamas described it as invalid and illegitimate, undermining the chances of peace and a two-state solution.
The Times of Israel reported at the end of September that an Israeli official said, "The Trump administration secretly warned Tel Aviv against annexing the occupied West Bank in response to the decision of many Western countries to recognize the state of Palestine."
The Israeli official, described by the newspaper as senior, indicated that Tel Aviv does not see this warning as "the end of the discussion," and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - wanted by the International Criminal Court - intends to discuss the matter with Trump.
