More Than Just a Delicious Taste... Grapes Boost Immunity and Combat Diseases
SadaNews - A U.S. study found that fresh grapes contain more than 1,600 active natural compounds, making them one of the most diverse fruits in terms of health benefits.
Researchers from Western New England University explained that grapes deserve a prominent place on the list of "superfoods" that boost immunity. The results were published on Thursday in the journal "Food Chemistry and Agriculture."
The term "superfoods" refers to foods rich in natural plant compounds that offer multiple health benefits to the human body. This list often includes berries, avocados, and nuts for their antioxidant properties and compounds that support the body's vital functions. According to the study, despite its abundant benefits, grapes are not adequately recognized within this category, especially since their unique composition makes them worthy of this status.
The study examined the biochemical composition of grapes, noting that their health effects are not attributable to just one compound but rather to the natural combination formed by those compounds together. Among the most prominent of these compounds are: antioxidants, flavonoids, anthocyanins, catechins, phenolic acids, and resveratrol.
The study indicated that over 60 scientific studies have examined the relationship between grapes and human health, concluding their proven role in supporting heart health by improving blood circulation, relaxing blood vessels, and regulating cholesterol levels.
Other clinical trials have also shown that consuming grapes enhances brain health by improving cerebral metabolism, contributing to better cognitive performance and mental functions.
Additionally, grapes boost skin immunity against UV damage, enhance the diversity of beneficial gut bacteria, and support eye health through their positive effects on the retina, which improves vision.
Regarding the impact of food on genes, the study revealed that consuming fresh grapes helps modify gene expression towards healthy directions, such as activating genes related to anti-inflammation, cancer protection, and improved metabolism, which may explain their wide-ranging health effects.
The researchers noted that regular consumption of grapes may serve as a natural and effective dietary means to boost immunity and prevent heart diseases, brain disorders, certain types of cancer, and age-related diseases.
Unlike some imported or expensive "superfoods," grapes are widely available, making them a healthy and economical option at the same time.
The team added that these findings open the door for further research into the role of grapes in prevention and treatment, especially in the fields of gene expression control and precision nutrition.
