Fruits: An Essential Component of a Balanced Diet
SadaNews - Fruits are considered one of the essential components of a balanced diet, as they contain fibers, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They provide multiple health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and helping maintain a healthy weight. With the increasing interest in gut health, the question arises about which fruits are best for the digestive system and those that should be approached with caution.
According to what was published by the Indian Express, Dipalakshmi, a nutritionist at the Shree Balaji Medical Center in Chennai, clarified a list of the best fruits for gut health, along with others that are advisable to avoid:
Papaya for Relieving Constipation
Ripe papaya is one of the best fruits to consume in the morning. It contains the enzyme "papain," which helps break down proteins and supports bowel movement. Its high water and fiber content makes it effective for stimulating the digestive system when eaten on an empty stomach.
Banana for Reducing Acidity
Dipalakshmi recommended consuming red bananas or small yellow Elettaria bananas, as they are low in acidity and rich in pectin, a fiber that helps soothe the stomach. However, she emphasized the necessity of eating them fully ripe, as unripe bananas contain resistant starch that can cause bloating or slow digestion for some.
Pineapple Against Bloating
When feeling bloated after a heavy meal, it is advised to consume pineapple due to its content of the enzyme "bromelain," which aids in protein digestion and alleviates gas. However, its acidic nature may not suit those suffering from acid reflux or stomach irritation, hence it is preferable to consume it in moderation.
Guava as a Protein Source
Guava is one of the richest fruits in protein, providing about 2.6 to 3 grams of protein per 100 grams, in addition to its high fiber and vitamin C content, which boosts gut health and immunity.
Fruits to Avoid
Dipalakshmi indicated that sweet lemon (known as 'Mozambi') is not an ideal choice for those suffering from indigestion and constipation, despite its common use in these cases. She explained that Mozambi lacks effective digestive enzymes, and its acidic nature may cause bloating when eaten after meals or in large quantities.
