Berri: The Agreement with Israel Will Not Be Implemented and There Is No Contact Between Me and Aoun
SadaNews - Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri stated that the framework agreement signed by Beirut with Israel in Washington under American sponsorship is nothing but "impositions", and it is ten times worse than the May 17, 1983 agreement.
Berri said in a press statement, "Ten times the May 17 agreement and not this one", emphasizing that there should be no drift towards any street movements or reactions that could be exploited to plunge the country into chaos and internal fighting.
Regarding rumors about the possibility of dismissing Army Commander Rudolf Haikal, Berri took a firm stance, stating: "No one should joke about this, and no one should play with the army", stressing that the military institution is a "red line and constitutes one of the pillars of national stability and the essential guarantee for protecting civil peace"; as reported by the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Akhbar" quoting him on Monday.
On the relationship with President Joseph Aoun, Berri replied: "He does not contact me and I do not contact him", pointing out that describing the agreement as "sedition" is the highest degree of political warning, as it is not merely a political disagreement, but a danger that threatens the unity of Lebanon and the Lebanese people.
He confirmed that "the most dangerous aspects accompanying the agreement are not only its political content but also what could result from attempts to stir internal divisions and drag the Lebanese into confrontations with each other, which serves the Israeli occupation before any other party".
He considered that facing this path must remain within constitutional, political, and national frameworks, noting that Ministers of the "Amal" Movement "will not boycott any cabinet session where the agreement is discussed, and there we will confront it and have our stance", affirming that "this agreement will not go through, and it will not be implemented".
Berri viewed that the only realistic opportunity available to Lebanon today to reclaim its rights and compel Israel to withdraw completely "lies in the American-Iranian negotiation track", as it is the only framework capable of producing balances that force the occupation to fulfill its commitments.
He stated that "any attempt to separate the Lebanese file from this path, or to proceed with separate negotiations with Israel according to American and Israeli terms, will only prolong the occupation and give the enemy time to impose new realities on the ground without any real guarantees for Lebanon".
Berri affirmed that any "negotiation with the Israeli enemy must remain governed by strict national controls and should not turn into a platform that grants the occupation political gains that it has failed to obtain in the field".
After the signing of the agreement, Berri issued a brief statement warning the Lebanese of the dangers of sedition, saying "O my people in Lebanon, all of Lebanon, it is sedition!".
