Talks between Tehran and Washington on Sunday in Switzerland and an Iranian warning of the agreement's collapse
SadaNews - Pakistan announced on Saturday that technical talks between the United States and Iran to implement the memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the US-Israeli war will take place on Sunday in Switzerland.
The Foreign Ministry stated in a statement, "Following the signing of the memorandum of understanding in Islamabad, technical talks will be held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on June 21," adding that Pakistani and Qatari mediators will participate in discussions with US and Iranian delegations.
An Iranian delegation headed to Switzerland on Saturday to discuss the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States, according to state media, while Tehran warned that this agreement would be "in jeopardy" unless Washington fulfills its commitments.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said that the delegation "will follow up and demand the implementation of the other party's commitments" under this understanding, as reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), which confirmed that the delegation departed from the Iranian capital.
Baghaei warned that "the other party must take necessary measures (to fulfill its commitments) as soon as possible. Otherwise, the entire understanding will be at risk"; this refers to ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
US Vice President JD Vance is expected to head to Switzerland in the coming days for talks concerning the implementation of the memorandum of understanding with Iran, confirming that envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have already arrived there.
Vance told Fox News: "I expect to leave in a few days, but you know it requires precise coordination," noting that Witkoff and Kushner are currently handling "some technical elements" in Switzerland. He added, "Things are going well."
Vance made his statements before Iran announced that it would close the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israel's continued attacks in Lebanon, one of the provisions of the memorandum of understanding.
According to what CNN reported, citing sources, Vance may head to Switzerland on Saturday to attend the talks with Iran.
In a related context, the US military announced that it maintains a state of "vigilance" following Iran's announcement of the reclosure of the Strait of Hormuz amid Israel's ongoing attacks in Lebanon, which were supposed to be covered by the understanding with Washington to end the war.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a statement, "US forces continue their presence and vigilance to ensure compliance with all provisions of the agreement with Iran and to ensure that it remains fully in effect," adding, "Safe passage through the international waterway remains available and unobstructed today."
