New Postponement in Sherine Abdel Wahab's Trial for Defamation

SadaNews - The Economic Court in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, announced the postponement of the second session of the trial of Egyptian artist Sherine Abdel Wahab in the case filed against her for defaming and slandering her personal account manager, after it was scheduled to be held on October 9th of this month.

The postponement decision came after it became clear that the scheduled date coincided with the official holiday for the October Victory anniversary, and the session was postponed to a later date that has not yet been announced, amidst significant media and public anticipation for the developments in the case.

During the first session, the court listened to requests from the attorney of the victim, who claimed civil compensation of 200,000 Egyptian pounds as temporary civil damages. This step followed the official complaint submitted by Sherine's account manager, accusing the artist of using offensive and defamatory language against him, either over the phone or through electronic means.

The complaint included a recounting of several incidents that the complainant views as an assault on his reputation and dignity, demanding appropriate compensation for what he described as "moral and material damages" that he suffered as a result of those statements.

Following the receipt of the complaint, the Public Prosecution commenced investigations into the circumstances of the incident, before deciding to refer the case to the Economic Court, which subsequently took over the examination of the accusations directed against the artist. The trial sessions are set to continue in the upcoming period, in preparation for issuing a final judgment in the case.

This case has attracted notable attention from the artist's audience, given her wide fame and artistic stature in Egypt and the Arab world. Observers are eager to see the outcome of the upcoming sessions, especially amidst the media tension surrounding Sherine Abdel Wahab's life.

For his part, Yasser Qantoush, Sherine Abdel Wahab's lawyer, confirmed that the decision to postpone was due to purely administrative reasons unrelated to his client's position in the case, and the upcoming sessions are expected to reveal the court's direction in resolving the issue.
